Recent winner of NBC’s The Voice Maelyn Jarmon got her start right here in Plano, Texas. Maelyn grew up in Frisco, and has a rich history with local children’s theatre, North Texas Performing Arts. From a young age she had a passion for being on the stage and starred in Plano productions such as Les Miserables, Thoroughly Modern Millie and many more. Musical theatre became the passion that brought her into the world of music.
“North Texas Performing Arts helped shape the artist I am today,” said Jarmon. “I found my confidence there and I was challenged and encouraged by the incredible directors who saw my potential. It’s a safe space to play and grow. A place that allows you the freedom to express yourself with people who celebrate your individuality!”
One of her NTPA directors, Cassidy Crown remembers her time at NTPA fondly. “Maelyn, or Maddy as we called her, has always been a star on and off stage,” says Crown. “Both her voice and personality shined. I loved doing shows with her and I’m so proud of where she is now.” Maelyn played many lead roles throughout her time at NTPA, so she was no stranger to the spotlight. Directors were always thrilled to see her audition for their shows.
With such an angelic voice most wouldn’t believe that because of damage from ear infections early on in her life she is completely deaf in one ear, and has little remaining hearing in the other. Though that has caused challenges in her life, it did not stop her from pursuing her dreams. Her love for the shows she did at NTPA went from a fun activity to a passion that drove her all the way to New York. Though Broadway was the original goal, she began to develop her passion for creating music and now is the most recent winner of one of televisions largest singing competition shows.
